Instructional Settings

RAI Digital Charter High operates a variety of optional alternative instructional strategies by which students in grades 6-12 may reach graduation requirements. Requests for alternative instructional delivery must have the prior approval of the Chief Education Officer and supervising teacher who shall be responsible for grading and accepting the final project as completed.

  • Independent Study: This option will offer personalized educational plans for those students whose needs may be best met through study outside of the primary instructional setting.

  • Project Proposals to Complete Course/Credits: Students may design single projects that meet the requirements of a particular course or may design an integrated project that brings the requirements of more than one course together. The project must be clearly designed with clearly delineated goals that parallel the course(s) outcomes.

  • Directed Study: Directed study is designed for students who have demonstrated special interest in a curricular area and who have shown the initiative and self-motivation to pursue a particular project or area of research. The purpose is to allow a student to pursue in depth or breath a special area of interest. Variable credit is assigned based on the proposal.

  • Internships Proposals for Course/Credit Completion: Opportunities to work in an area of personal or career interest may be provided through internships. Internship plans must be presented in written form specifying objectives and the work schedule to meet the objectives. Students proposing internship must present a case for the depth of interest and mastery of core subject matter.

  • Work Study Proposal for Course/Credit Completion: Students may design a work-study experience integrated with a required graduation requirement or an elective. Credit may vary for each project based on the design, implementation plan, and hours involved. While the work-study will be different from the regular school experience, it must be definitive and based on the outcomes of a course.

  • Community Service: Service learning helps to meld community service with student learning. Credit for community service will vary depending upon the specifics of the service, duration, depth, and other factors.

  • Co-Enrollment: Students enrolled in other schools other than RAI Digital Charter High or the Vallecitos School District may co-enroll in courses offered by the charter school on an individual basis as mutually agreed upon between the charter school and the student’s district of enrollment.

  • Post-Secondary Options: A high school student classified as an 11th or 12th grader and accepted by a post-secondary institution may enroll either full or part-time in non-sectarian programs at that post-secondary institution. Students must work with the Chief Education Officer or designee to ensure that courses taken fulfill credit requirement for graduation from RAI Digital Charter High. The charter school shall retain the right to determine the amount of credit to be awarded for each course taken. Credits received at a post-secondary institution are on the student’s record and count as courses completed at that institution as well as credits for graduation from high school. Students withdrawing from a course at a post-secondary institution shall expect the same procedures and/or penalties as any other high school student when withdrawing or failing a course. If the student is still in progress at the post-secondary institution enrolled in those courses that would complete the program, but are not yet complete, on the date of RAI's graduation ceremony, the student shall be allowed to participate in the ceremony. A signed diploma will be awarded when the charter school receives the transcript for the college grades.
