What is RAI Digital Charter High about?

The mission of the Rainbow Advanced Institute for Learning Digital Charter High School (RAI) is to enable all students in grades 6-12 to become self-motivated, competent, lifelong learners equipped with rigorous academic standards as well as the technological and problem solving skills necessary to become contributing members of society in the 21st century. RAI is founded on the principles of a classical education, advanced use of technologies, and teachers as professionals. The school was chartered with the vision that all students should receive a college preparatory course of study if they are to become effective citizens.

What grade levels does RAI Digital Charter High currently offer?

RAI provides a complete education for students in grades 6-12. Upon completing all of the state graduation requirements, student will receive a high School diploma and participate in a graduation ceremony. RAI is a WASC accredited school providing students with an internationally accepted transcript.

Is RAI Digital Charter High for everyone?

No, RAI Digital Charter High is not for all students. The distance-learning format is one that requires self-motivation and discipline. Parental supervision is needed.

What does it cost to attend RAI Digital Charter High?

As a public school, there is no cost to attend RAI Digital Charter High. Tuition is free to students who are residents of San Diego, Riverside, Imperial, or Orange counties in the State of California.

How do students at RAI Digital Charter High interact socially?

Students interested in RAI Digital Charter High typically are involved in a variety of social activities and sports activities separate from the regular high school. In fact, some would chose this school setting because the flexibility it affords in their busy lifestyle. RAI Digital Charter High also offers a variety of school activities such as field trips and social events designed to bring students together socially.

Do students have to log on every day?

Yes, students will be assigned regular classes in the core subject areas of English, Math, Science, and History. Students must log into the class at its assigned time periods each day, Monday through Friday. Additionally, students have two independent study periods. One period is for independent PE activities and the second period is for their elective class. Parents of students unable to attend classes must contact the office prior to the office. Unexcused absences will be considered truant and subject to disciplinary action.

What is required to attend?

Textbooks, materials, and supplies are provided free of charge. Online resources such an electronic libraries are also offered free of charge. Students should have their own personal computer that meets minimum systems requirements. Students also need Internet access to participate in the classroom, collaborate with other students on projects, research, taking exams. Students needing assistance in procuring the necessary equipment may contact the school.

What types of computer skills are required of the students?

Basic computing skills such as keyboarding, word processing, and file management is a prerequisite for participation at RAI Digital Charter High.

Are all classes integrated?

RAI Digital Charter High uses a classical educational approach wherein issues are addressed in the context of problems found in the real world with teams studying questions and themes that cut across academic disciplines. Teachers work collaborative to ensure that history is used as the binding strand that brings the other disciplines together to develop a coherent curriculum.

Are classes project based?

Yes. Project based learning is a key component of the academic program at RAI Digital Charter High. Projects are done in an age and grade appropriate manner during a period of the school day.

Are there electives?

Yes, RAI offers a wide variety of electives and their course offerings are expanded each year.

Will there be foreign language?

Many foreign language classes are available for students to take as electives.

Does RAI Digital Charter High have a sports program?

No. There are no sports program available at the school. Many students compete athletically through local club sports programs.

What about physical education?

Students at RAI Digital Charter High need to complete 1 hour of physical activity everyday. This is done independently and student must fill a P.E. log specifying the date and time spent on the activity. The completed form is signed by the student and parent and emailed (or mailed) to the office staff every month. Students can participate in a number of activities including walking, running, baseball, football, soccer, aerobics, skating, and martial arts, among others.

What grades count as passing?

To pass a class, students must earn a grade of C- or better.

What happens if a student does not pass a class?

Students must re-take each course until is satisfactorily met. Summer school or intervention assistance is available for students in assistance in meeting course requirements. Additionally, students must make adequately yearly progress as demonstrated by performance above the 50th percentile in the school’s testing program as well as meeting statewide performance targets. If a student is having academic or personal difficulties, a plan will be developed by each teacher to help the student experience success. Should the student continue to demonstrate difficulty after one semester of implementation of the plan, the student may be referred to the Council of Master Teachers for consideration for intervention or supplementary services and explore the option for intervention, including having the student tested for a learning disability, if applicable. A meeting with the Chief Education Officer will be required of any student that has failed to meet course requirements after one (1) semester. Students will not be allowed to remain enrolled at RAI Digital Charter High is course requirements are not met within two semesters.

What is the role of parents?

Parents can help their child succeed at school by carefully monitoring student participation in classes, keeping involved, checking their own emails at least twice per week, and making sure that students complete all assignments within the specified timelines. Parents should communicate any special needs a student may have to their teacher(s) or keep the staff informed of any family problems that might affect a student’s progress.

What exams do students need to take?

RAI Digital Charter High utilizes a balanced approach using a comprehensive system that includes State tests (STAR, California Standards Test, High School Exit Exam, and California English Language Learner Test) as well as a classroom assessment system based on results of daily student performance. Teachers evaluate and grade all student work in relation to the given standards under study.

Credits acquired at another school will be accepted if that high school is accredited. An accredited school is one that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or by the State Department of Education. Students transferring credits from foreign or non-accredited domestic high schools must provide a transcript and must take a designated test to validate their credits. Those students who have been home schooled follow the same procedures as students from unaccredited domestic schools. The transcripts must include a listing of the subjects taken at each grade level.

Students are required to pass the California High School Exit Exam, pass all courses, and meet minimum course credits prior to receiving a high school diploma.

How do teachers know that students are online when class is in session?

Students must log on to each course each day. The teacher takes attendance and is aware of is signed on to the class. Since our instructional program has audio and video capabilities, the teacher is also able to track student involvement through in-class question and discussions.

Can students graduate early?

Yes. Students can take additional classes if academically capable and graduate earlier than usual. Refer to the “Instructional Settings ” tab under the “Academic Program” section of the main menu bar for further information.

Are RAI Digital Charter High teachers credentialed?

All teachers at RAI Digital Charter High are credentialed and fully qualified in accordance with state and federal requirements.
